Thyroid Care Collaborative (TCC)

The Institute of Medicine has identified four fundamental problems that underlie current inadequacies in the delivery of healthcare in America: (1) the growing complexity of science and technology, (2) the increase in the number of patients suffering from chronic conditions, (3) a poorly organized delivery system, and (4) constraints on exploiting the revolution in information technology. These difficulties are familiar and salient to thyroid patients and their physicians, highlighting the importance of finding innovative solutions that will enhance the reporting of clinically significant information. The ability to harness cloud-based information technology to provide portability of information and greater connectivity between clinicians not linked by a common record system and their patients would represent a significant advance in this respect.

To this end, the Thyroid, Head and Neck Cancer (THANC) Foundation embarked on an ambitious project in 2010. Independent of any individual practice or medical institution, we assembled a team of experts in otolaryngology, endocrinology, endocrine surgery, medical oncology, radiation oncology, diagnostic radiology, cytopathology and nuclear medicine with the goal of advancing the quality of thyroid care to its highest level. The product of this endeavor is a unique internet-based program named the Thyroid Care Collaborative, or TCC. The TCC is a disease-specific electronic health record system accessible to patients and their self-selected team of care providers, regardless of institutional affiliation. As a highly comprehensive, HIPAA compliant tool, the TCC strives to facilitate the provision of high-quality thyroid care by taking advantage of the creative opportunities that a disease-specific reporting system affords. Our goal is to provide the most comprehensive and personalized treatment to patients over the course of their lifetime, and to facilitate clinical research through the creation of a powerful thyroid database.
