30 Stories in 30 Days

September is Thyroid Cancer Awareness Month. For the next 4 weeks, we will post stories written by thyroid cancer survivors, caregivers and friends for our 30 Stories in 30 Days campaign. We hope their perspectives and insight will help others along their journey.

By hosting, recording, and streaming the presentations and follow-up discussions which happen at Thyroid Journal Club, the Thyroid Care Collaborative (TCC) has seized an opportunity to provide a multidisciplinary, academic medical perspective to any doctor who wishes to participate online.

When you hear the term “journal club”, you may think of a group of friends sharing their thoughts on popular books and movies. But for academic physicians, Journal Club is an event where medical research articles are presented and discussed among a panel of thyroid experts. Journal Club creates a space for endocrinologists, surgeons, radiologists, pathologists, oncologists, and other physicians who treat thyroid disease to gather and keep each other updated on the latest cutting-edge publications which may influence treatment and clinical decision-making. Journal Club also attracts guest speakers and leaders in the field visiting from other centers such as Eyal Robenshtok, MD at Rabin Medical Center – Beilinson Hospital’s Davidoff Cancer Center, MD Anderson Cancer Center, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and Interpace Diagnostics.

Journal Club meetings certainly benefit academic physicians and patients at major institutions. But what about all the doctors practicing independently in suburban and rural communities, who treat thousands of thyroid patients across the country? Virtual Journal Club is one part of the solution. By hosting, recording, and streaming the presentations and follow-up discussions which happen at Thyroid Journal Club, the Thyroid Care Collaborative (TCC) has seized an opportunity to provide a multidisciplinary, academic medical perspective to any doctor who wishes to participate online. This bridges the gap between community providers and major medical centers, improving both physician expertise and patient care. The TCC is one of the online initiatives fully sponsored by the THANC (Thyroid, Head and Neck Cancer) Foundation and continues to innovate and modernize the care of thyroid patients worldwide.
