30 Stories in 30 Days

September is Thyroid Cancer Awareness Month. For the next 4 weeks, we will post stories written by cancer survivors, caregivers and friends for our 30 Stories in 30 Days campaign. We hope their perspectives and insight will help others along their journey.

In 2014, a dear friend to the Foundation, Carmela Sagendorf compiled recipes for a cookbook for the purpose of raising funds and awareness for THANC. Altogether, her contributors sent in over 250 recipes—from renowned chefs, former patients, THANC board members and staff—filling the book from cover to cover. Before it was even printed, the first edition sold out. So, we edited and released a second edition in 2015. This colossal collection of culinary classics caters to the needs of our audience with thyroid-healthy, post-treatment friendly, gluten-free, heart-healthy, and vegetarian dishes. Patients recovering from surgery and radiation therapy have a difficult time maintaining a healthy diet. Chewing and swallowing may be impaired, favorite foods may no longer taste good and the act of cooking for themselves can be exhausting. So, it was important to us that the cookbook gave patients as many nutritious and simple-to-make food options as possible.
