The THANC Foundation once again lent a helping hand at the annual Thyroid Screening sponsored by The Mount Sinai Hospital’s Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. September was Thyroid Cancer Awareness Month, and those who dropped by The Mount Sinai Hospital learned that thyroid cancer is not just the most common endocrine cancer but also one of the few cancers whose incidence has increased in recent years. In response to the rising prevalence, Mount Sinai’s annual Thyroid Screening aims to make screening more accessible for individuals at risk for thyroid disease.
The ability to open our mouths is an absolute necessity when we eat, speak or express our feelings to those around us. Now, imagine for a moment that you could not open your mouth wide enough to do any of those things. That’s what every day was like for Matthew Cartisser.
On November 5th 2015 we celebrated 12 years of success in the fight against thyroid, head & neck cancers. We also took this opportunity to honor our heroes at “A Starry Night” Gala at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Chris Cuomo, anchor of CNN’s “New Day” was the Master of Ceremonies.
After a remarkable 11 years of service as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the THANC Foundation, Mr. Donald Levy, Chairman, CEO and Founder of The Levy Group has stepped down to focus on his family and business.
The Thyroid Care Collaborative (TCC) wrapped up 2014 as its biggest year yet and by the time this newsletter is printed we will have surpassed our first goal of entering more than 1000 patient records in the system.
The passing of Hugh Biller last month conjured up many memories of a unique individual who had a tremendous influence in my life and my career. I had the opportunity to train under him and then to serve as a member of the faculty in his Department of Otolaryngology after I returned from my fellowship.
Last spring our former board member, Carmela Sagendorf approached THANC with a novel idea. She wanted to create a cookbook, the proceeds from which would benefit the Foundation. Carmela along with dedicated volunteer, Carol Graybeal and Foundation staff collaborated to refine and publish a collection of healthy and delicious recipes.
