April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month, there’s no better time to come in for a free screening! The THANC Foundation hosts it’s annual Free Oral Cancer Screening on Friday, April 20th.
A comprehensive oral cancer examination administered by a dental or medical professional. If, during the examination, a suspicious red or white spot is detected, the dental or medical professional may refer you to a provider to perform a painless brush biopsy test to determine if there are any potentially pre-cancerous or cancerous cells present or suggest another appropriate treatment option.

Oral Cancer is one of the most common yet most preventable cancers. Out of 70,000 people diagnosed this year with head and neck cancer, 30% will include cancer of the oral cavity. While most people are aware of the link between smoking and lung cancer, few realize that the use of tobacco products is the primary cause of oral cancer. Among people who neither smoke nor drink, this type of cancer is nearly non-existent.
The 5-year survival rate for oral cancer discovered in a late stage is 36%. However, when detected early, the survival rate increases to 82%. The American Cancer Society and the American Dental Association recommend yearly professional oral exams. A careful oral exam is the first step in prevention.
