Dr. Mark L. Urken has published over 300 peer reviewed papers in addition to over 30 chapters and 3 textbooks on head and neck reconstructive surgery. Having performed over 3000 head and neck microvascular procedures during his career, his experience ranks among the highest of any surgeon in the world. In addition to his clinical and research responsiblities, Dr. Urken founded and has continued as the Medical Director of the THANC Foundation.
THANC has afforded Dr. Urken the opportunity to direct multiple research and educational initiatives that are outside the bounds of normal academic medicine. Included in that, is an annual international head and neck course that he directed for 20 years. He has also used the foundation to help to enhance collaboration between world experts to raise the level of head and neck and thyroid cancer care world wide.
